Langston Hughes was an American poet and was known to be a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. The poem â€Å"Mother to Son† was written by Langston Hughes in 1922 and the poem portrays a conversation between the mother and her son. The poem revolves around the mother telling her son that life is full of ups and downs and no matter what happens, not to give up. The poem showcases hardships, hope, and words of wisdom that the mother will tell to her son. The mother begins by how her life wasn’t easy, she states â€Å"Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair† (Hughes, 6). This line describes how she begins with saying that her life wasn’t like a crystal stair. When I heard the â€Å"crystal stair† I immediately thought about how crystal stair is, the†¦show more content†¦She then says â€Å"And sometimes goin’ in the dark† (6), â€Å"where there ain’t been no light† (6). By those lines she says in order to acco mplish something and reach that place of hope then you have to go through places that someone wouldn’t normally want to go through in order to achieve that goal. Then the mother shifts the poem and telling her son to never give up. The mother says â€Å"So boy, don’t you turn back† (6). She is saying that to him because she went through all of those struggles and hardships and there are ups and downs but there is always hope. She then says â€Å"Don’t you set down on steps† (6). Sitting down on steps meaning that you are giving up and taking a break from the goal that needs to be achieved and she is saying not to do that. She then says â€Å"Don’t you fall now† (6). I see that quote as an indication that her son has been though a lot and she is telling him not to quit now. It’s sometimes easy for people to advise others not to give up, and it’s the main theme of this poem but in reality it’s really hard not give up. I’ve been through many hardships in my life, but you just have to realize that there is a hope for every hardship. I believe that it’s a great theme to have on this poem. The way the mother was going on with the stair being torn up or the splinters, it really represents how the path for some people are. The path is never paved straight, and as we go through the struggles and hardships we learn a lesson in our lives. More and more massacres and threats are affecting our schools on a daily basis. No one should fear to receive an education and certainly no parent should fear their child entering the doors of an elementary school. What can we do to prevent these tragedies from happening again? How can we strip the worry from the men, women and children involved in our educational systems at work today? The only options to putting an end to the untimely and unfair deaths of our teachers and students is tighter security, psych evaluations, and armed personnel. The Functionalist looks at society as a body where everything has a function. There are formal organizations as law, education, the family, the media, political system and informal social actions such as suicide, love, and crime. Altogether serve a function and have consequences on society. Crime is normal and found in every society. It shows us what is acceptable or not. Crime produces rituals as court processes and boundaries which show us who is in and who is out. Durkheim believed that a very high rate of crime or deviance shows that something had gone wrong with the society. Suicide is a social phenomenon which can be explained by things such as religion, economic situation, social structure, sexual orientation. Suicide is higher in protestant than catholic countries, more common among single people than married, more common in military than among civilians, rates of suicide drop in time of ar and they are higher in times of economic crisis. The anomie theory of Robert Merton (1957) is distinguished between cultural goals (material possessions, status symbols) and institutional means (opportunities to achieve these goals in a socially acceptable way). At the age of fifteen, Smith beganattending Glasgow University where he studied moral philosophy. In 1748 he began givinglectures in Edinburgh where he discussed rhetoric and later he began to discuss theeconomic philosophy of the simple system of natural liberty which he later proclaimed inhis Inquiry into Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. In 1751, Smith was appointed professor of logic at Glasgow university,transferring in 1752 to the chair of moral philosophy. His lectures covered the field ofethics, rhetoric, jurisprudence and political economy. In 1759 he published his Theory ofMoral Sentiments, embodying some of his Glasgow lectures. This work was about thosestandards of ethical conduct that hold society together, with emphasis on the generalharmony of human motives. Smith moved to London in 1776, where he published An Inquiry into the Natureand Causes of the Wealth of Nations, which examined in detail the consequences ofeconomic freedom. It covered such concepts as the role of self-interest, the division oflabor, the function of markets, and the international implications of a laissez-faireeconomy. The Wealth of Nations established economics as an autonomous subject and,launched the economic doctrine of free enterprise. In the western world, it is the mostinfluential book on the subject. When the book, which has become a classic manifestoagainst mercantilism, appeared in 1776, there was a strong sentiment for free trade in bothBritain and America. This new feeling had been born out of the economic hardships andpoverty caused by the war but the British public and parliament still clung to mercantilismfor many years to come. Smith laid the intellectual framework that explained the freemarket and still holds true today. Blair Witch Project An Analytical Essay Essays - Fakelore Blair Witch Project An Analytical Essay Blair Witch Project An Analytical Essay Anita Maiezza Power of film David Grey December 5, 2000 The Blair Witch Project is a mock documentary on three film students: Heather, Mike and Shaun, who go out and shoot their own documentary on the Blair Witch. This Blair Witch apparently haunts a forest in Burkittsville Maryland and these students are going to find out firsthand if this rumor is true. Unfortunately this rumor turns out to be fact and all three characters are eventually hunted and killed by the Blair witch. The scene which I have chosen to analyze is a short ten second scene near the very end of the movie. In this scene we see a close up of Mike, from a diagonal angle. Mike is rocking back and forth and then yawns. This scene is key point were the viewer realizes that there is no hope for MIke and Heather. The woods are just too vast for these inexperienced students. In this scene, Mike is wearing his backpack that is bigger than him indicating the the burden he has to carry. Besides the burden it can also represent all the pressure he is under at this particular point. The backpack, being larger than he is can be a metaphor for how small and insignificant he is in comparison to the colossal trees around him. The fact that the straps are so big and that they wrap around Mike can show how he is completely engulfed by this pressure, just like he is surrounded by the trees. The backpack and trees completely overpower Mike, causing him to feel helpless and miniscule, like a child. The second image chosen is Mike rocking back and forth, followed by the yawn. In most scenarios children rock themselves when they are nervous. This clearly hints that Mike, an average sound technician is no longer himself but rather someone else who is overtaken by the immensity of the forest. The yawn gives Mike the innocent look that only a child possesses so the viewer is led to think that Mike is a mere child in comparison to the forest. A closer look at Mike exposes his beard, contradicting the childlike innocence, so the element of confusion is a predominant one. (seeing as how Mike and Heather are lost and confused.) The rocking can also depict an autistic person. In this case it is evident that Mike has lost his mind and rocking back and forth will bring him serenity. The trees not only surround Mike in every direction but in this scene they are shot diagonally. This is definitely not natural, normal and not something that a completely sane person would see. Evidently Mike is not sane anymore. His world has been turned upside down. The trees add a sense of confusion and disorientation that Mike, as well as the audience feels. By looking at the trees in the background the viewer has a chance to look into Mikes mind and see the current situation through his eyes. Mike has no sense of judgment left and cannot correctly perceive what is going on around him. From the moment all three characters enter the woods, they are small compared to the immensity of the trees and inexperienced, just like children. They have no power over what is going on and what is going to happen. They, like children do not know where they are going and lose themselves very quickly as the story proceeds. At the end of the movie Mike and Heather go on a very confusing and insane search for their partner Shaun. At the very end Mike and Heather are murdered by the Blair Witch.
